What are Vowels and Consonants?
Vowels
Vowels are speech sounds produced without any significant constriction or blockage of airflow in the vocal tract. In English, the letters A, E, I, O, U are always vowels, and sometimes Y functions as a vowel.

Consonants
Consonants are speech sounds produced by obstructing or restricting the airflow in the vocal tract. All English letters that are not vowels are consonants (B, C, D, F, etc.). The letter Y can sometimes function as a consonant.
Examples: "book" (B, K), "cat" (C, T), "dog" (D, G)
